Interfaith Encounters - General Study Sessions

HU Interfaith Encounter on 19th May 2008:

TALKING – Students Group for Interfaith Encounter at the Hebrew University
Founded by the Interfaith Encounter Association
2nd encounter: May 19th 20088

The encounter took place with six participants (all of them students at the Hebrew University); two coming thanks to the last publicity (and were not previously part of the mailing list).

The theme for the encounter was Head Coverings (Kippa and Hijab).

We started by looking at the Jewish sources (from the Talmud and the ruling of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef), and a conversation about the meaning of the Kippa (skullcap) – separation from Christians, manifestation of belief in God, etc.

We continued with the reading of several relevant Suras from the Quran, which present the prohibition on men to speak with a woman who is not covered. We spoke about different interpretations – can they speak in private behind some barrier, or maybe it means that a woman has to cover herself in order to be able to speak with a man. We also spoke about the duty of covering the hair and growing beard for Muslim men.
